Santa Came Late

Hi folks,

Well, I'm happy to say that Santa came late this year and brought me a new computer. Well in this case, Santa is actually my wife. (She makes a really neat Santa minus the beard). After nearly 7 years of my trusty HP 166 mhz, I've finally moved up to a screaming demon 2.53 ghz computer. I honestly didn't know that GoatWorld would come up so fast! I sure cannot complain about my old 166...heck, it built GoatWorld and many other sites. Heck, I even ran an Internet radio station back a few years ago with it (what was I thinking?).

Anyway, poor Pam, she's had three new computers in the last 6-7 years and each one has turned out to get whacked by lightning or moreso, a lemon. I'd be pretty hardnosed if I didn't let her use this one once in awhile eh? I will - Mondays from 7am to 7:30am. LOL. Just kidding.

So it's really nice to ring in the New Year with such a nice, new toy! I don't know how many of you know my background with computers but since I'm on a roll here and it's a New Year, I'll give you a small story before I head off to web land.

I've been involved with computers since the late 70's when the Osbourne was the rage. Carry a suitcase sized computer from office to office - no thanks. Then of course the Apples and the Commodores came along and I had to have one of them as well. My first actual PC was an Intel 8088 (remember those anyone?) and it was the rage...well for a couple of months anyway. SOmetime in the 90's I became hooked on Macs again and had several of those. IBM was slow top catch up but I was bound and determined to run a BBS (bulletin board service) called Syzygy BBS out of Huntington Beach, CA. 2400 Baud never had it so good was my motto. Of course it was a long ways from GoatWorld, but it was a start.

About that time, the actaul Internet became more or less a widespread reality and I was among the first to have an Internet account with Chapman college out in Orange, CA. Those were the days. No pictures or graphics...just a green screen, text, and long addresses to remember. From that time on (the early to mid 90's) until now, who can keep up with it? It has been a flurry of new computers, upgrades and whatever else Bill Gates and his entourage of nerds can dream up to get money from us for.

So why am I telling you all this? Who knows. But I'll never forget the toys I had as a kid and the toys we have now. Who would have dreamed I'd be standing there with a goat leash in hand back in the 60's only to be unleashing goats on the web in the 00's. I spent the better part of 25 years being the typical computer nerd only to cater to a whole new generation of nerds. I'm sure glad technology has given us all this. Now if I can just find time to understand it all!

Happy New Year everyone!

Gary
