Hi GoatWorld,
I'm hoping for some advice about my 5 year old doe, Zelda. She had 2 big healthy kids Jan19,and everything seemed to be going well. This morning Zelda was off her feed alittle - she nibbled abit, but none of her usual gobbling. On checking her out I noticed that one udder is full and hard, the other looks well nursed. I looked further and found that both labia are swollen, firm and warm to touch. Both kids - a boy and girl - are doing well. I milked Zelda's big side down to soften it up and will keep up with that, hopefully 'till I can get the kids to use it too.I had to work 12 hr night shifts for the past three nights, and didn't get to see if she passed her placenta. Worried about the swollen labia, I called my Vet and gave her 6cc's depocillian this morning, and he came to see her this afternoon.I was wooried she might have retained placenta or possibly another kid, but my Vet said he thinks its a digestive problem. Her temp is normal, and ahe has no fresh discharge. My Vet gave me a calcium supplement, a probiotic, and a glucose syrup and advised me to drench her once a day for three days or untill she gets her appetite back.We gave her the first dose before he left at 4pm. Chores are at 4:30, and Zelda was back to gobling. My Vet was'nt sure about why her labia are swollen though.Should I continue to give her the depocillin for possible infection, or is the swelling a normal after birthing occurance? None of my other does have looked like this after.-Janet
