We also use a bander and wait until the kids are 6-8 wks old. I've never heard of cutting the sac off but in a way it makes some sense. I may consider that this year.
My disbudding iron is a Rhinehart X-30. It's a good iron and given the proper amount of time to heat up between kids it does a great job. We didn't even have scurs on the first batch of kids (i.e. the kids we learned on!).
We also give cd/t and tetanus before doing any banding or disbudding.
