Is the skin underneath red and scaly? It sounds like mange. If the skin is very oozy and irritated you may be dealing with sarcoptic (sp?) mange which is highly contagious. The other form of mange(demodex) does not have the same degree of skin irritation and is caused by a weakening of the animals immune system. Extra Vit C and use Goodwinol ointment will help with the demodex for the sacoptic or red mange get to the vet!
