Whenever I have a heavy milker to dry off I do it by cutting her grain for at least a week before I start cutting back on the milking. That usually cuts down on the amount of milk she's giving. Then I go by how much she's giving per milking and I milk her halfway out twice a day. i.e if she's milking 4 lbs. I take 2 lbs. cutting her grain back even more. As her udder loosens up, I'll take her to once a day still taking only half and then I'll just take some of the tightness off as she begins to produce less milk. Eventually she'll get on the stand and her udder isn't even tight. That's when I go to every other day...and then every third day and on and on until she can go for a week until her udder is still soft after a week or more since milking her. Then I let her go for a week or so and milk her out. That usually does it. Sometimes I've had to milk them a couple of weeks in a row until they stopped. I like my heavy milkers until it's time to dry them off!!

If you're worried about mastitis, get a CMT (Jeffer's, Caprine Supply, Hoegger's) and check her. Just being full can make the udder feel warmer than normal to you but better safe than sorry!

I'm sure you'll get more replies to this and most probably some better than mine!!! This is just how I do it and it works well for me even though it is a big pain in the patootie at times! Good Luck!
