There are a couple of wormers that can be used before kidding and there a few that should not be used before kidding. Your safest bet "before" kidding is perhaps SafeGard - a white wormer paste given orally. About the only problem I've seen though with the SafeGard is that it is not always effective because many worms have built up a resistance to certain wormers over time.

As per how much to use and the timing. SafeGard is one of the safest wormers so I don't think it is possible to overdo it. There are many opinions on the frequency of worming and perhaps the best thing to do is to invest in a small microscope and learn to perform your own fecal testing. This alone will help determine when to worm and how often (and even with what type of wormer). There is an article or two in the GoatWorld Articles section that discuss how to do your own fecal testing. It really is not as difficult to do as it may sound.

Alot of times breeders will wait until right after kidding and then worm the does with the wormer of choice that has proven effective in their area.

Some of the wormers NOT to use during pregnancy - Valbazen and Cydectin. Use of these may cause abortions or malformed fetuses.

There is an article I just added to the Articles section about wormers. I have added the link below for you.

Hopefully a few of the others will jump in here and give some of their advice too.

Best regards,
