I pretty much agree with the advice the others have posted. It's not like we sell a lot of goats ourselves but there are a number of people in our area that "broker" goats and sheep quite a bit. So one thing I have used (with some fluctuation) is the Market Reports that are listed on the main GoatWorld page. A few of my friends quite often compare the Springfield, MO (which is now actually held in Nixa, MO) with the report for San Angelo, TX.

Now of course if the local slaughter house gives me a call looking for a wether or two, he usually will not pay what the market report says but a little less. But then there is another slaughter house that pays a fixed price year round (most of the time anyway) no matter what the market price is.

This is primarily dealing with meat goats and that is mainly what we've seen at the sales yard. They have dairy goats from time to time but even these too follow pretty much the same guidelines as do the meat goat sales.

I guess overall the rule of thumb is the price is what the customer is willing to pay and the seller is willing to sell for. Typical supply and demand but the market reports at least give an rough idea of what kind of deals a person can get for mostly "untested" and a "quantity over quality" type goats put up for sale. I've seen a goat purchased for as little as $20 at an animal swap meet and sold not more than an hour later for $100 to someone else.

Just my two cents.
