Disbudding is usually done with a hot iron specially designed for the purpose. It is usually done before the kid is 3 weeks old, just as soon as you can feel the horn button. You can use elastrator bands, the same ones used for castration, to remove horns on older goats. The horns must be a couple of inches long to get the bands to stay on while they cut through the horn. Disbudding with a hot iron is my preference. I think someone here has a link to a site showing dehorning by using the bands. The FiasCo Farms site has an article about disbuddign with an iron complete with pictures http://fiascofarm.com/index.shtml
Wethers do not have the odor, hair or nasty habit of peeing on themselves like bucks. They make nice pets, pack goats or companion animals. They are often less expensive to buy than a breeding animal.
