I honestly think in the beginning most folks should use a mix already made. Just look at the tag carefully and don't accept any animal by products, animal fat or animal protein period. And if you have a choice of a tag that says processed grain by products etc etc etc, and one that say corn, oats etc. Pick the one with the named grains in it. Big posts down below on Thurmans mix, a homemade grain mix lots of folks use. To a good quality all grain mix you can add your own Black Oil Sunflower Seeds to increase the fat. We feed one pound of grain for body maintenece for about every 80 pounds of body, then a doe gets 1 pound more for every 3 pounds of grain, so yes 4 or 5 pounds of grain for a 160 pound doe milking 3/4 to a gallon of milk. We split this up into 4 feedings, two in the barns with the other goats mornings and night, then twice on the milk stands at milking. Like on the other post I really pay alot more attention to the condition of the doe than how much she is eating. Vicki
