My oldest (and first!) milker is a Nubian/Alpine cross. She's about 12 years old now and still going strong. In my opinion she has the best tasting milk of the whole bunch. It's creamy but not as much as the purebred Nubies. My mother wants only Matilda's milk! She says the other is too thick! I'm breeding Mattie to a Nubian this fall and then I'm going to fall to my knees and pray all winter for a doe as Mattie is being retired this year...and I want a replacement!

The upside to the butterfat produced by the Nubians and LaManchas is that it makes killer ice cream! And I think the cheese is better because of it.

In a dairy situation, it makes sense to cross the two breeds. Alpines are known for their ability to produce large amounts of milk while the Nubians are known for the flavor and butterfat. If milk is what I was going for, I would consider that cross very seriously.

Just my opinion but I hope it helps a little!
