Hi Helene,

I don't blame you. I don't think I would buy lumpy feed either. It usually is a good sign that it may have gotten damp as well. The molasses could very well harden up somewhat in colder temperatures but the mold you described most probably indicates moisture.

Alot of times what some of these feed outlets do is buy more product than what they have a demand for. The end result is that you get a bag of feed that is past its expiration date (if applicable) because it just sits there for awhile waiting to get purchased by some unsuspecting customer.

There WAS a web site at www.aafco.com that was the American Associated Feed Control Officials that had an article on how to read and interpret a feed tag (anyone know where they moved this web site to???) It told how to tell the mix date and all that. I can see that I need to find that article and add it to GoatWorld now.

If this is a major brand like Purina or something, I'd urge you to write me personally and I can put you in touch with their manager who will ensure that this doesn't happen. It's bad business for them and they certainly don't want their distributorship outlets stocking moldy feed.

By the same token, I've noticed this alot with certain antibiotics like Penicillin, Tylan 200, Oxytetracycline, etc. I always look at that expiration date. On one such purchase not long ago, I noticed that the expiration date on a batch was the week before I would have bought it. The sales clerk and store manager gave me a song and dance how it didn't matter. I told them I intended to contact the maufacturer (Agrilabs) and surprisingly they (the store) pulled out a fresh batch that had an expiration date about one and a half years later. They had the fresh stuff all the time - they just wanted to sell me what they could not move. Buyer beware - especially with goats. They know the demand isn't always there and the buyer is all to happy to get something because they know that goat specific products are not in wide abundance.

Best regards,

Gary Pfalzbot
