I can only hope that others have put more thought into getting their first goat than what we did. Would you believe she was a house-warming gift? My sister-in-law showed up with this cardboard box and said, "You've got a farm now, you need a goat!". Of course, she didn't bring any advice on how to care for the little kid!
We had no food, shelter, or any idea of how to care for this little wild goat. Talk about your bad beginnings!
She spent her first week in our garage and eventually learned to accept being petted and handled by humans. We hustled and got hay and feed for her, fixed up her chicken house and fenced in a play yard. We learned mostly through trial and error. It was before we had internet access and I had no one to consult with!
She ran away that first day. Across the yard, to the main road, and cut for Tulsa as fast as she could go! Me running after her, yelling, "Here goat! Here Goat!", still wearing my dress and high heels from work. A teenage neighbor boy saw us and yelled to his dad, "Dad, some lady's chasing a goat up the road!". His dad said, "Well go help her!!". Soon neighbors were stopping what they were doing, jumping out of trucks, and joining in the chase. We managed to surround and close in on her and capture her. She screamed her head off. :( What a way to meet your new neighbors, huh?
I think she was lucky to survive her first week with us. We were totally unprepared for her, and my SIL should be shot for giving a living being as a silly gift! So there's a short course in "How NOT to do it!".
