Hi Nancy,

Sorry to hear about Tinkerbelle. That must be awful. I'm really not sure what you can do about the tooth - probably will fall out on it's own. I would think that the only way it could be saved is by anesthetizing her and performing an implant surgery if it's a tooth she really needs. But given the situation, we both know that she would probably not realize the importance behind the implant procedure and would ultimately lose the tooth anyway. Could be very expensive as well.

For pain, I imagine she is probably feeling some but on the other hand, I've read where the "shock" that goats withstand is tremendous. Given their breeding and natural inclination to head butting, they withstand alot of pain in the frontal section that would drop other animals to their knees. I can almost bet that if a test were done on the pain receptors in a goats head, you would find very few as opposed to other parts of their body.

If you feel so inclined and get the chance (and actually want to pull the tooth yourself), I would get some nylon string and make a self tightening slip knot. One good yank up (if the tooth is on the bottom) or yank down (if the tooth is on the top) should do it. Just be swift. Probably best though to just leave it alone and let nature take its course.

But all in all, if you had any concerns about her being in any discomfort, you can give 1/2 to 1 St. Joseph baby aspirin (no substituting) every 8 to 12 hours. That will go a long way in helping reduce her discomfort.

In the meantime, I would treat this situation in the very same manner one would treat themselves after having a tooth extracted because the tooth socket will be susceptible to bacteria. It might not be a bad idea to isolate her for a few days in a very clean area with the food off the ground. I'd also consider putting out a pan of water with some iodized salt mixed in. This will help shrink the gums, kill some of the harmful mouth bacteria to the socket, and keep the socket from becoming "dry socket". That would be my main concern.

Please let us know how she progresses. Haven't had too many incidents involving a loss of a tooth so would like to know more how she does.

Best regards,

Gary Pfalzbot
