I think you hit the nail on the head Dalice. The key is the causative agent. Probably the best bet would be to culture the eye, and treat it with the drug that the culture is sensitive to. But, who's gonna want to culture every time a case of pink-eye comes around. I'm sure many cases are probably as simple as just a foreign body in the eye, which will get better on it's own 9 out of 10 times.
