Mary, last year Mike's uncle put his round bales of hay in the barn a little too early I guess, because he wound up setting his barn on fire, the hay was not fully dried out.
We do the hay as bedding in our barn too, and in the winter, I do a layer of shavings, then the hay. Straw only if we have it. I hate waisting good hay on bedding. I do not think you have to worry too much about the bedding catching up on fire because it is wet, also I am sure you are constantly cleaning and raking in their as well getting the nasties out etc.
Sheesh my boys cleaned out the goathouse the other day, and by the end of the day the flies were unbelievable..anyone else having a major fly problem? It seems it started a heck of alot earlier this year.
