Hello again Leah,

Selling meat goats or goat meat differs among where you live. For instance, I believe in many states you can sell directly to the processing plants although USDA requires that the animals be delivered live. Some plants will require health certificates, most not. And depending upon the processor and their own economic outlook of supply and demand, you may or may not get a good market value price.

Another way is selling through auctions. This for us at least, has been the most profitable but care needs to be taken to not sell when the price per pound is too low. I've seen this happen quite often - been there and done that myself a couple of times. You'll learn to gauge the "market price" by the time of year (ethnic holidays, etc.). If you are near a "known and reported upon" goat market point such as San Angelo, TX or Nixa, MO, it makes it that much easier. Otherwise, the next method is perhaps the best way.

Selling outright from your farm. Once you make it known in your community that you have meat goats available, you'll have a good variety of people, especially Hispanic and Mid-East customers who will purchase live goats from you, at a price you set, and they will take them and dress the goat themselves (or hire a processor).

Personally, I like to take my goats to market AND keep a small supply of meat whethers for any customers who might show up at the door. It's not like I am any big operation, but a person has to start somewhere. The difficult thing about meat goats is parting with them. I mean, you raise them up from kids and you know their purpose and destiny, but that day comes when you have to ring out the old to pay for the feed and care of ringing in the new.

Hope this helps.

Best regards,

Gary
