If you are ABSOLUTELY SURE of her breeding date you can induce her. If she spent more time with the buck after the breeding date you observed be aware that many does will recycle 5 to 7 days after the initial heat and become pregnant then! A kid born more than 5 days early will likely not live at all, even a few days early it may be too weak to stand for a day or 2 and require bottle or tube feeding. So unless you are ABSOLUTELY SURE do not induce, stay home or let nature take its course while you are away.

You can induce but the drug is by prescription only. You give 2 or 3 cc of Lutalyse by SQ injection. Kidding should be within 12 to 48 hours (usually close to 30 hours after induction).

When is it okay to induce a doe and since i know how to give vaccines and such is there a problem with me doing it or does it have to done by a lisenced vet? My doe is due to kid the weekend that I am going out of town and won't be home to help, would it be a bad idea to induce her a day or two before so I can be here to help? Her udder is full and she has had mucus or a week to a week and a half and i'm suppose to be going put of town Friday. What do you suggest I do?

If the discharge is creamy white, this is the mucus plug and she can give birth within hours to 2 weeks from now. If the discharge looks like yellowish egg whites she is in labor and should have kids within the hour. If she doesn't she is in trouble. Put her somewhere safe like in a kidding pen especially if it is her first time. SOmetimes does will get up and run from their newborn kids because of the pain from kidding. it will be easier to help if she needs it if you can easily catch her.

Go to the Fiasco Farm website goat health pages at http://www.fiascofarm.com and look at How to Read the Tail Ligaments for a method of predicting when kidding is very close. This takes a little practice but really helps.

You can't know when without a firm breeding date you can only guess. Take the billy away from her a doe that is kidding smell just like one in heat, he will be trying to breed her even while she is trying to push a kid out.

It is ALWAYS better to have a breeding date or at least a breeding week....

I have a doe that has been exposed to a billy since I got her back in March and she has mucus discharge coming from the vaginal area so I suspect that's she pregnant and about to kid because she is bulging a little on the sides and her udder looks full. Is it safe to assume she's pregnant and about to kid and if so how long do you think it might be? Would there be any other reasons for mucus discharge?
