I know Maggie, that was our thought at first too, but my husband wants him home now, and wont let him go..he is out there now in the rain digging his grave. In case you all cant tell, we dont have children and these are our babies. He died in the night. When we went out to feed last night it was very obvious he would not make it through the night. He still was in the same spot and now his neck was distended crooked around and tucked. I had read somewhere that this was a brain thing from b defficiency?? cant remember. we had just started administering Thiamine too. just in case. He had Polio when he was young and I still wonder if he was ever up to full speed after that. I still would have liked to have the necropsy done, but I wouldnt have any way to keep him till monday when my vet opens so I wont push him on this one. Thank you so much for your help and Understanding on this. It helps more than you'll ever know.

Well dang, Let us know what you find out. And not to sound morbid but if you do lose him, don't let his suffering (and yours) be wasted. Have a necropsy done to see if you can find a cause.

Hi all, I am still fighting to keep Dude alive. We have been back and forth to the Vet a lot. He has been wormed treated for cocci (first stool came back light cocci, second one came back clean) He has been magnented and I have been syringing him water and electrolytes. today I went out and he could not get up. My hubby and helped him up and made him walk a little. We have him isolated from the herd right now and we are waiting for the lunch hour to pass to call the vet.yet again. I am most likly loosing him. He will take a bite or two of apple and then he wont touch it. same with hay and raisins. We have been keeping him alive by feeding through syringes, anything we can get down him. water baby grain ceral, electrolytes, anything. I just wanted to thank you all for trying to help. This has been a loooong fight, and he is very tired as are we.
Pam.

Well I had heard that before, I guess when he didn't look fat as usual I started to worry. I'll be worming them all on the fourth of July, so I can do that early anyhow. I will be getting the Ivomectin for that today. Thank you for the advice. I very much appreciate it.:-)

Wethers do fine with no grain at all if they have good hay. I wouldn't force the issue with him.

P.S. yes they always have loose minerals and baking soda available at feeding time, but he has never been real groovy with it anyhow he'll take a few licks and thats about it. I did notice with this batch of grain I had mixed up this time it looked very dry. I hate this feed store, its never the same. and I do a lot of griping at them. But now I have 500+ lbs. of the stuff. But none of the other goats are miffed by it, just Dude, the rest eat like piggys as usual.

Hi there thanks for responding,
I checked his eyelids first thing and they are nice and rosey. This started with a new batch of grain. It was like a little kid who'd had the name brand switch on his mac and cheese and said yuk! He is grazing well drinking water and after hay real good. doesn't act any different other than the grain thing. But I will walk around with him tomorrow morning to get a sample and take it in. He did eat about half of his norm tonight and yesterday morning.

Hi Pam - Just my thought - I have a doe who does this with grain. I finally figured out she was letting me know it was moldy. I get a new bag and she would dig right in. During hot weather it can mold very quickly if it is not kept in a cool location. Now I keep it in the house. You may want to check his temp. Check eye lids for a bright pink color - if they are not, he is anemic caused by a worm load. Check to make sure he is urinating enough. Do they have loose minerals and soda available at all times? If he is acting normal and all is well, I would keep an eye on him and if anything changes, get back to us. I'm sure Maggie or Barbara will give you some good (expert) advice soon. Take Care!

Hi Pamela, I am not a vet of any kind. But I will say my experience just starting 6/09/2006 went like this. My 11 month old billy suddenly went off feed, & at the same time he became very depressed, stop coming over to me we I would enter their pen. We have a large pen and free grass out side of pen offered daily.
We had a combination heat wave rain pattern. Rainy at night, nearly 100F durring the day. And he ended up with a worm overload. Take a sample.
Do your research of which medication you are comfortable with.
I prefer Hoegger's herbal wormer. Can be found via the internet at hoeggergoatsupply.com. And works on all types of worms safely.
Because he was already off feed I used worm clear tinctiture as directed on the bottle in 2 days of its use he was back on feed. And now doing wonderfully. although I will say it took me a week to 10 days to get everything back to normal.
Check a sample do your research,& act fast. Even if you use a wormer double check. Good luck!

Hi, I have a 1 1/2 yr. old wether. he has been snubbing his grain for a couple of days now. but eats hay robustly and takes water fine. I can get him to eat maybe a handful of grain in the morning, and if Im lucky again at night. tonight nothing. lately he has just sifted through it to get out the corn and leaves the rest. should I be worried? they have lots of good graze, and its been hot, could he be being picky just because he can, with all the good graze?
