Truly all pygmies are line bred. There were only about 150 original animals 50 years ago, about 1/4 of those were never bred outside their own group. Go back 3, 4 or 5 generations and they are ALL related in some way.

Now about line breeding, any bad traits will be magnified by that tight a breeding. If they both have weak legs the kids may have weaker legs, if they both are very short bodied the kids may be more so. Line breeding should only be done between 2 nearly perfect goats in whom you wish to make those traits even stronger and more likely to be passed along when the offspring used for breeding. Trying to breed undeisrable traits out of future generations will be all the harder. Linebred traits are very strong and will often come out again and again.

Please do not breed the young doe until she is at least a year old, preferably 14 to 18 months old. She will start coming into heat when she is about 3 months old and can get pregnant then. Her dam may already be pregnant again if the buck is with them. Does often cycle into heat a week after kidding and certainly within a month after kidding.

Is it safe to line breed Pygmy goats. Specifically ,I have a Buck & Nanny. They have had two kids and I would like to keep the female. If I keep her he will try to breed her. Is this safe, will the kids from this union be deformed or not perfect in anyway? If so I will find her a new home.
