Your "polio" doe may be hypocalcemic, often called pregnancy toxemia or milk fever. Try giving CMPK liquid or gel 4 times a day at 1/2 to 1/4 the cattle dose. Well fed does can get this especially if they are carrying multiple fetuses. Please start treating her now for this, being off feed and laying around in late pregnancy is THE sign for hypocalcemia. You might also mix up a batch of Magic solution and give that 2 to 3 times a day.

The injection site reaction you are having with the other goat is pretty common of oxytet. Do be SURE you are getting the needle all the way under the skin. If you inject oxytet into the skin it is very irritating. Be sure you DO NOT have your finger on the plunger of the syringe as you put the needle into the skin. If you do you inevitably inject a little as you go in. it will go away in a few days to a couple of weeks. SOme goats also seem to be more sensitive and if the bottle is a little old it can cause more of a reaction.

I have two questions actually...
First, I had one of my boer does get polio mid pregnancy last year. Now we just noticed this morning she is swaying her head back and forth when she is walking and is staying by herself mostly and not eating very well. First saw slowed eating about 3 days ago but we thought maybe she was going to have her baby that day. Laying around a lot and didn't seem to want to come out of shed. She is due by 1/20/07. It seems to be the start of polio again. The only thing missing is her resting her head against stuff. Could this be something else. She is pretty large and last time had large twins. could the babies take too much from her. She has alfalfa/brome hay, clean dry feed and f/c minerals with correct units of measurement. Her coat is shiney and softer than ever before... NOthing has changed and everyone else is fine. Is this something that could reoccur every time she gets pregnant? Gave her 10cc of Fort Vit B this am will get some thiamine from vet today if it is polio. Please help. The meds aren't expensive but if it is pregnancy induced now will we be hurting her if we continue to breed her?

Second question is I have another doe in a separate pen with what I am assuming is pink eye or some other sort of infection. Have given 5cc SQ BioMycin for 3 days now and gave another shot this morning and noticed the area I gave her the shots is now all hard? I switch sides each day...It felt like the area was completely dehydrated, couldn't seem to grab the skin at all, it wouldn't come together. Haven't seen this before, not that I have noticed anyway. Have used it many times before.
