Just thought i'd post this morning and let everybody know how my little goat is doing. She is very bright and alert, she can stand and walk - slowly though, and we still have to stand her up, but once up she is ok. She does crawl around a lot though. She is eating a lot, and is really eating her hay well. She looks happy, and other then still needing to gain weight (has gained some though), and get strong again, she is doing very good - and i owe it to all of you on goat world !

If i wouldn't have found you wonderfull people i would have never known how to save her, or even what her symptoms were pointing to - Thank you all VERY, VERY much :-)

I will keep you all updated on changes/progress, but i'm thinking she is going to make it through this, and i have to say, i really thought i was going to lose her, she was so bad off at times. Thanks a bunch ~

I'm just so excited and relived ( well and tired) to see improvement - and i owe it to this board, as i would have never know about polio or vit. B in time - you are all wonderfull people and are doing a great thing by helping. I can't even get any vets to help ( none of them do goats in my area ).

I will keep track of her temp as well, and you all will be the first to know if it goes into a fever range. But i'm very happy it is back up in the average range - i was starting to worry about her low temp.

Thanks :-)

Give her some time... It take you a couple of days to get over a cold, right. Stick with the vitamin B for now. As long as she is improving, keep up the same thing.
If you change in the middle you won't know if she is worse because she was already getting worse or if your additional treatment is having an adverse affect.
If she doesn't need antibiotics, it is not a good idea to give them. Some time in the future she may have a bad infection that won't respond to antibiotics if she has had them too much. Plus antibiotics may mess up the rumen again.
And you have to start over. I have been through this... Vitamin B is what she needs most.
If she declines again... You can try the antibiotics. But keep in mind you will need to keep the beneficial bacteria in her stomach.
Give her at least a few days on just the B shots. I have had goats take 2 weeks to show improvement from other problems. If it is Polio she shoud be her old self with in a few days. Especially if she has responded positively over night. But keep giving the B shots for a week. She may look all well but keep them up for the full course. If you have to go the Antibiotic route. Complete a full course of that. Just a couple of shots will make her better short term but it just allows the bugs to build up a resistence, and future antibiotics won't work on that problem in the future.
You will have to find another antibiotic to use. Finding one is hard enough.
A low grade temp is the body's way of fighting infection itself. If it is not too high give her some more motrin. Check her temp as the motrin wears off. If it goes too high let us know.

That sounds great just keep her on the meds.
Yes you are correct a low temp means ruminal problems and organ shut down so her temp now is great.

Good news :-) If she keeps on going like she is i think she might just pull through this. She can stand now ( not quite get up by herself yet-but soon i think)and walk slowly. She is eating her hay very well and drinking plenty of water. She is alert and interactive again, and she can sit/lay like a goat should all by herself (on her tummy )and she even crawls around.

Overall she seems to be feeling a lot better, and is really coming around - i hope it keeps going this way.

Yes, i have been useing the Fortified B complex with the 100mg Thiamine - not the most plesant stuff, but i won't ever be without it again.

She has also been having a low temp - well when i found her she was hypothermic at 92.2 on thurs the 4th. her temp slowly went up to 100.2 on Wed. the 10th, but last night it was 102.7 - so is this a good thing, i know it's not a fever yet, but does it just mean she is going back to normal and her rumen is starting to work good again or ? ( i heard a low temp can mean the rumen is not working correctly) I don't know what her "normal"temp is, so i will be keeping an eye on it.

Thanks for all your help, i couldn't have made it this far with out it :-)

I think you already have the Thiamine. Vitimin B
I have had no luck with Vets and goats... Here they don't know about goats, so won't treat.
The antibiotics should be available at the farm supply store. If you find some, post the type and strength here so some one can adjust dosage if necessary.

If it is this one - COMPOSITON: Each mL of sterile aqueous solution contains: Thiamine Hydrochloride (B1) 100 mg you can give 1 cc per 20 pounds every 4 to 6 hours for the first 24 hours then 2 to 3 times a day for 5 to 7 more days..

If it is this one - COMPOSITION: Each mL of sterile aqueous solution contains: Thiamine Hydrochloride (B1) 12.5 mg you need to give 1 cc per 3 pounds every 4 to 6 hours for the first 24 hours then 2 to 3 times a day for 5 to 7 more days.

I would go to the vet and get thiamin 500mg and give 1cc sq and 1cc orally every 6 hours for 24-48 hours around the clock then twice a day for 5 days.
I would also give 1cc/20 lbs sq of peniccilln the same schedule as the thiamin and give her probiotics once a day as well and keep up with the electrolytes.

Well it could be wishfull thinking, but i think she might just be doing better this morning.

Yesterday when i got home she was just starting to wimper/cry, so i gave her her first B shot, and some motrin, along with water and electrolites. Then i gave her her other shots at night and early morning - but when i got up to come to work ( and give her another one) she seems to have more life in her - nothing drastic, but not worse either.

Again i was in a hurry this am after her shot and electrolites/water/motrin - so i couldn't take her temp, but last night at 9 it was 100.9.

So last night she was out of it, didn't respond to noises, was very weak and not moving her legs or anything - looked horrible, like any minute she could go.

This am, she greated me when i walked into the kitchen with a baaa, and she actually moved her head to try and look at me, and kicked her legs about - so I'm hopeing this is it and will work.

Thanks,
Chrystyna~

I think you should go with the B shots first.
I don't think it is a good idea to throw too much at her at once.
It has been my experience that The Vitamin B will help most things pretty quickly.
Give it through the night and see how she is in the morning.
