I wait 30 minutes before I check on progress. If I feel a sac or nose I give the doe another 15 minutes. Often stimulating a doe like this will start her pushing and at least she will get the kid closer making it easier to retrieve. If you wait too long the uterus continues to shrink (it shrinks with every contraction) around the kid leaving no room for you to reposition a kid coming wrong. If the doe pushes hard for over 15 minutes without producing a kid or a part of a kid I go in and check. I have NEVER regretted checking on a doe's progress! The general rule is no more than 30 minutes after the water breaks a doe should start to push hard, no more than 30 minutes into hard labor you should HAVE A KID, no more than 30 minutes between kids. Usually my does will break their water have the kids pass the afterbirth all within 1 to 1.5 hours total, mine typically have twins and triplets.

How long do you have to deliver a kid after the water breaks? I've freaked out a couple of times because the water broke and wasn't sure how long we had to help get the kid out. It would sure set my mind at ease. Thanks!
