Oh thanks so much. I tried the mineral oil but I don't think I'm getting very good results. It's so messy too but makes their coats really shiney!!! LOL!!! I switched over to a different ear mite drop for dogs just yesterday. Do you think I should discontinue this and just use the Ivomec? I tried other dog drops but the ingredients in this one was slighly different. I think I'll switch to the Ivomec though. These poor little boys ears are all scabbed up on the edges. I just need to get rid of these things. I hope I'm not putting their little ears on overload with all of the stuff I've been dropping in.

Also, how often can I dust them with the Sevin-dust to get rid of the lice? Or I guess I should say, how long does it usually take for lice to die off? I think I'm actually getting somewhere with that one.

Finally, I've heard that goats that get lice and ear mites may typically have a mineral deficiency. I provide Golden Blend minerals to them. I see them eat it but it seems like its a never ending bucket of it. Maybe they aren't eating enough of it. Do you know approximately how much they should be eating?

Thank you so much for your advice and encouragement. I'm going out right after work tomorrow for the mineral oil. I'll have to let you know how it works.

Megan, don't get too discouraged even though I know it's tough not to. Goats require alot of special care and extra attention but after awhile you'll start to reap the rewards (even though the obstacles and pitfalls have been many).

What I would recommend that you do for the ear mites is to get a spray bottle and some mineral oil. Take the bottle of mineral oil with you and put a few drops in each ear or spray with the spray bottle dampening the inside of the ear...don't flood them alot but enough to completely cover the inside of the ears. In the next few minutes you'll see a moving mass of ear mites trying to reach dry ground...now go ahead and spray the ears again and the surrounding areas and you'll start drowning the ear mites with the mineral oil. If you do this everyday for the next few days, your goats should start getting over the ear mite problem but keep in mind that the ear mites that have made it past the first treatments will be hiding elsewhere. I always make it a point to gently mist the goats, especially bald spots, etc. where the little critters will mass.

While I've used the VetRx for certain cases, I've found that the mineral oil is much easier and cheaper (and sometimes better smelling).

Best regards, GP

1 other thing I forgot. How much loose minerals should the goats be eating approx.? I see them eat it all the time but it seems like the dish never empties.

AAAHHHH!!! I feel like I just can't win with these goats. It's begining to make me wonder if I'm meant for this ( I know I am and love them to death. I'm just really frustrated). 1st I deal with listeriosis... poor little thing didn't make it. Then polio... fortunately he is doing much better. Then earmites... I can't get rid of them. 2 of my 3 wethers are continuing to shake their heads and scratch at their ears. I've used earmite drops probably about 4 times in the last 1 1/2 - 2 weeks. I ordered the VetRX which was supposed to be to me today but I just found out it's backordered. The edges of their poor little ears are all scabby. Anyway, so I went out in the barn just a little bit ago to give the eardrops again. I was just kind of checking everyone out and noticed dry skin on one of them. I looked closer in the hair and I find out that now I have lice to deal with too!!! I could just scream. :-) The weird thing is that I just dusted them and the barn with Sevin-Dust on Saturday hoping that it would help with the earmites maybe. I figured it couldn't hurt. I don't get it. I clean out their barn every week. What now? Should I just dust them again Saturday when I clean out the barn again? Sorry to complain and make this so long. I'm just getting discouraged dealing with one thing after the next. Am I having a bad luck streak or is this typical with goats? At least if it's typical I can stop giving myself such a hard time. LOL!!!
