Thanks so much for your great advice! My male valiantly fought, but I think I caught it too late. My other male came down with the same symptoms. It has been VERY wet and cold for this area. I followed your directions at first sign and he seems to be responding well to treatment. Will keep you posted!

With switching from penicillin to oxytet you cancelled the effects of both due to the residual penicillin in her system. These 2 drugs cancel each other out.

Start her back on EITHER penicillin OR oxytet for 5 to 7 days. If you use the penicillin give her 1 cc per 15 pounds by SQ injection twice a day. If you use the oxytet give her 1 cc per 30 pounds by SQ injection once a day. Or if you can don't use either of these but get Naxcel from your vet and give 1 cc pe 50 pounds twice a day by SQ injection for a week.

You can give banamine at 0.1 cc per 10 pounds once a day for pain and fever. Or you can give Liquid Children's Motrin at 1 cc per 10 pounds orally every 6 hours for pain and fever.

Start the kids on bottles to help her out, if they will take a bottle or just be sure they are getting enough to eat. They are a bit young to wean but not too young. If she is sick she won't have the milk to feed the kids.

Good farm help is hard to find unfortunately.

My LaMancha Doe has 7 week twins at her side. When I was down with pneumonia myself my help neglected farm chores and left her with no water, nor bedding when it was 15 degrees out and her breathing was labored. She drank the warm molasses water I gave her and then ate alfalfa and some grain. I cleaned the pen, put a heat lamp in & started her on Penicillin the first 2 days, then switched her to Oxytetracycline the last 3 days. She still is having labored breathing, eating some and is still up on her feet. I don't know what else to do for her.. All are up on their shots/deworming and the other 2 does and buck are fine..
thank you

Keep him on Biomycin once a day at 1 cc per 30 pounds. You can give banamine for pain and inflammation and fever at 0.1 cc per 10 pounds once or twice a day for 3 to 4 days. Or if you don't have or can't get banamine you can give Liquid Children's Motrin at 1 cc per 10 pounds every 4 to 6 hours. If he is not better in 2 days you may need to change antibiotics. In that case I would recommend getting Naxcel from your vet.

Keep him hydrated by giving warm water with a turkey baster. He needs about a gallon a day. You can also mix up some Magic (1 part molasses, 1 part vegetable oil, 2 parts Karo corn syrup and a little warm water). Give this at 1 to 3 ounces 2 to 3 times a day to help keep his energy up. You need to be sure he stands up for at least a few minutes 4 times a day to keep his leg muscles from atrophying and becoming permanently contracted. Be sure he is urinating.

My male goat was lethargic yesterday, but still eating well. This morning he couldn't stand up. I administered an injection of Biomycin, but he seems very dehydrated and has a wheezing/rattling sound when he breathes. What else should I try? Thanks!
