Two different does have had abortions in the past 12 hours. They were both in about a month away from kidding. Neither of them have cleaned yet and it has been about 24 hours for the first one. We had the herd tested for CAE and most of them came back positive. The herd is locked inside a pen of about 750-800 sq. feet and there are 30-35 goats in the herd. They are outside during the day in a large yard. During the grazing season, they are generally out on pasture all the time. This is the first time we have breed this many goats; last year it was about half as many. About three months ago, we had another abortion with a doe that was only about one month along. Any idea what the cause of this could be. We have already quarantined the two most recent does from the rest of the herd and have them on OT200, per the vet's order. Any help would be great.
Thanks, Andy

Boer doe, 1 day old, frozen ears, what should we do? Had her dried off good but last night was 0 degrees with wind chill of -30. Warmed her up and put back with mom but ears are thickened on lower half.

I have a one week old boar billy with diarrhea. I have given Biosol, Pepto Bismal, fever reducer and C&D antitoxin today. I also have given him about 50cc of gatoraid. Would Nuflor be indicated? He is in the house with me tonight so I can watch him. So far, his twin is fine. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Thanks

Really not sure what else it could be, maybe a bruise, I would hate to imply a possible CL abscess, those are usually pretty hard. Watch it for a few days and see what it does. Can you feel a distinct knot even though its soft? Bottle jaw is a generalized swelling just blood serum collecting in the tisues (edema). A hematoma or abscess may feel more distinct like a sac. I might be inclined to deworm and put him on Geritol (give the adult dose) twice a day.

If you are feeling brave you can take a fairly large needle say an 18 gauge with about a 6 cc syringe and try aspirating the swelling to see if you get blood pus or clear fluid.

Thanks, Maggie! I love reading your posts and advice (lurker). I will cut his grain ration for sure. I will need to start feeding him and his pal seperately somehow. I did pull the eyelid away from the eye and looked at the bottom eyelid. So, if this isn't bottle jaw, what could it be, and what should I do besides worm? I will probably take a fecal to the vet tomorrow (not that I trust her one iota).

Please cut his grain ration in half, he is getting as much as a hard working dairy doe! He needs about 1/2 cup of grain twice a day, no more. Two cups of grain is just under a pound usually. If his eye membranes are bright pink he likely doesn't have bottle jaw. Bottle jaw is a sign of severe anemia, his membranes would be very pale or white. Be sure you look at the inner surface of the lower eyelid. You have to pull the eyelid away from the eye to see where I'm talking about. Just looking at the rim won't tell you anything, this is nearly alsways very pink. To use the Ivercare give 3 times the horse dose by weight, for a 100 pound goat give as for a 300 pound horse. Give it orally. He probably does need to be dewormed.

AC burns and tastes very bitter, most goats truly hate it.

I have a 10-month-old wether who I think may have bottle jaw. I noticed it tonight but not yesterday, and it's fairly large. There's a lump under his chin, it's soft, about the size of a tennis ball. Eye membranes are bright pink. I didn't take a temp. I was drenching him w/ AC due to some urinary issues and at one point, he really acted like it was killing him-hacking and throwing his head. Not sure if it went down the "wrong tube" or what, but I'm pretty sure this didn't cause the big lump under his chin. I didn't notice the lump till I was done drenching. He hasn't been wormed for 5.5 months. The only wormer I have on-hand right now is Ivercare paste for horses. If you recommend something else, will you try to recommend something I could get at TSC? I don't want to wait for mail delivery. Also, as I'm fairly new to goats, please include dose/how many days/times and route of administration. This goat gets grass hay free- choice, Purina goat minerals free-choice, a large scoop of Purina goat chow 1x/day (have tried to weigh it but my scale won't register it-maybe about a pound?), w/ AC sprinkled on it, and baking soda free-choice. His doeling buddy has no problems. The wether's droppings yesterday were berries w/ just a slight bit of mucous at the end of his "dump," for lack of a better word!

Thank you!
