A probiotic is usually a paste or liquid that contains the beneficial bacteria found in the digestive system. It is given when the goat is under stress, being treated with antibiotics, when deworming, etc. You can also use yogurt with live cultures (look on the label) and give 2 to 4 tablespoons of that once or twice a day. Since polio is where something has killed off alot of the digestive microbes you can get them going again alot faster by giving a probiotic or yogurt for several days.

Polio is not an infection so penicillin won't help. If she really has polio she has to get enough thiamin to help. If you are using FORTIFIED B Complex (check the label it NEEDS to have at least 100 mg of thiamin per each ml) give 1 cc per 20 pounds every 4 hours. If you are using regular B Complex (this one will only have about 12 mg of thiamin per each ml) give 1 cc per 2 pounds every 4 hours. When using B Complex to treat polio you DO NOT use the dose given on the label but give the amount needed to give enough thiamin to treat the polio.

Take her temperature it should be 101.5 to 103.5. If it is over 104 then start her on penicillin at 1 cc per 15 pounds 3 times a day for the first 2 days then twice a day for 5 more days.

Give a probiotic to help put back her digestive microbes.

Find the cause of the recurrent polio problems in your herd. It is often the hay they are eating, or this year from eating old forage, grass and leaves.
