Possible but not likely. You would be surprised what they can get cut on including their own teeth if she was scratching at it if the joint was irritating or hurting her.

This foot/joint problem is a recent developement and she is about 10 months old. I also just discovered that the skin on the top of the knee joint has opened up. I am guessing it is not a cut becuase I never saw any blood and there isn't anything really sharp in her pen. I noticed it when i was feeling the joint, there was a bit of hard crusty material and after trimming back the hair I found a half inch long "cut" that was pretty wide but dry (no blood or pus). I just put some cream on it and am giving her the antibiotics. Is it possible that the internal infection ruptured the skin?
Thanks!

Ellie

With noticing the joint soreness and swelling, she may have something like Joint Ill, more common in very young goats (or has this gone on since she was little?). A lingering systemic infection such as joint ill may be contributing to her generally not doing well. I have noticed that the elbows and stifles (knees) seem to be the joints most often affected.

I have had very good results (often amazing results) using oxytetracycline (LA 200, Agrimycin 200 or Biomycin 200) at 1 cc per 30 pounds given once a day by SQ injection for 10 full days (her dose would be about 1.5 cc). The reason oxytetracycline may work so well for this is it actually settles in fast growing bone tissue (joints).

Hi,

Yet another posting on the same little goat. In my last posting I described what seemed to be foot rot and I have been soaking it in bleach solution every night or so for a couple weeks. the sole of the foot looks ok now but she is still not using that back leg. A few days ago I was checking her out and noticed her knee (?) joint was swollen and warm to the touch, since then it seems the swelling has gone down some but still not using the leg. And every once in awhile she will favor one of her front feet. The back hoof was also warm to the touch for a few days when the problem first appeared but now is normal. I was reading more about CAE sysptoms and starting wondering if this may be what i am dealing with given her prolonged breathing problems and now the leg problem. She has been sick for many months now, I was almost ready to put her down in January becuase of the breathing and she wasn't eating and lost 15lbs but she came around and gained back 10lbs so far but still only weighs 40lbs (i weigh her on a scale) My other goat appears very healthy.

Thank you for the continued help with this girl.
