Give her thiamin. If you have Fortified B Complex give her 1 cc per 20 pounds by SQ injection. No more honey! Alot of extra sugar upsets the digestive microbes and can bring on enterotoxemia. The milk should be okay if she is pooping and peeing normally. Or give an electrolyte solution like pedialyte or Resorb. Ten cc of motrin is enough for a 100 pound goat, the dose is 1 cc per 10 pounds. The dose is 1 cc per 10 pounds. 1/2 cc of penicillin is only enough for a 10 pound goat.

It does sound like a digestive infection or parasites (coccidia).

I suspect enterotoxemia, but she could have pneumonia. Advanced enterotoxemia usually has neurological signs similar to polio (can get up, pulling the head up or to the side), the goat will cry in pain. The thiamin may help with neurological function (this often accompanies enterotoxemia as the intestinal microbes that produce thiamin die as the harmfull ones that cause entero increase). Increase the dose of penicllin to 1 cc twice a day. This will help treat entero or pneumonia. Take her temperature again. You can give SQ Ringer's Lactate (get this from you vet) to keep her hydrated and not stress her digestive system further. Give 10 to 20 cc under the loose skin over the shoulder blades every 2 to 4 hours. The prognosis for entero is very poor.

They can have coccidia without getting diarrhea. She is at about the right age for coccidia. It would be best to get a fecal check. To treat coccidia use a sulfa drug like Sulmet or Albon 12.5% drinking water solution. Give 1 cc per 5 pounds for 5 days straight from the bottle.

Thank you for that, Maggie! I never had a problem with oak leaves, either, but I just read that article that says young leaves could be a problem. And I did see her nibble on a young tree. Her temp was 101.5 before I gave her 10cc of Motrin.

Our vet is out of town. I tube fed her 6 oz of goat milk with a bit of honey this evening, and gave her 1/2cc pencillin. She's just laying there now, crying once in a while. She's very wobbly on her legs, can't get up by herself. What else can I try? Thanks again so much for your help. Sonja

My goats eat oak leaves all the time. Goats are not as prone to oak poisoning as other grazing animals. They have to eat ALOT for it to do any harm and a month old kid doesn't eat that much solid food. By now any oak leaves should be out of her system if she hasn't eaten in a day.

Please take her temperature, this could be pneumonia or some other infection. Normal is 101.5 to 103.5. If you have given Motrin within the last 4 hours though you may not get an accurate temp. You should probably get her to a vet today, she won't last much longer on just water, no matter what her problem is.

We have a one month old kid that is sick since yesterday night. She won't nurse, has sunken eyes, and drinks a lot of water. She moans and just stands or lays in a corner. Our pasture has oak trees with new leaves, and I just read that this could be the problem. I've given her 20cc of ToxiBan twice, and some Children's Motrin for pain. Anything else I can do? Many thanks for any help you can offer. Sonja
