If you have penicillin or LA 200 (Biomycin 200) you can start her on that too. This wound is bound to be (get) infected. Look between her toes for the wound. Trim her hoof very closely looking for the wound. Goats can become very lame from hoof rot too and if you find a pocket between the hoof wall and frog (the softer inner pad of the hoof) you need to trim it out. If it is hoof rot a bit of bleach and water solution will help it heal.

Yes you can give Liquid children's motrin at 1 cc per 10 pounds every 4 to 6 hours as needed.

Question: Can I use baby motrin on a pregnant goat? She seems to be in more pain today. No signs of swelling but she is walking on her knees alot more.

Thanks a bunch for all of your good ideas. I cant find a puncture wound but I did find the bloody nail. Un fortunatey I live in rural Alaska and vets are not easy to get. I will definately soak her foot and the sock is a good Idea too because most of my yard is rather muddy right now. I dont want t confine her to the barn because she gets stressed out but I may have to. Thanks agian.

All references I could find on using DMSO (and all were for human use only) said not to use during pregnancy or in children as safety and toxicity in these instances had not been proven. Better safe than sorry, no DMSO while she is pregnant. DMSO has come a long way in medicine.

DMSO has been approved for a urinary tract condition, I believe Interstitial Cystitis. MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) is being used as dietry supplement. It converts to DMSO in the body without the negative side effect of the bad smell/taste. MSM is an organic sulfur compound that exists to some extent in all living things. MSM is a basic nutrient required for the proper functioning of the body.
DMSO hasn't been approved for politcal reasons. It's in the book THE PERSECUTED DRUG: THE STORY OF DMSO. If you'd like to know more about DMSO, read DMSO: Nature's Healer by Morton Walker.
Kind regards, Sonja

DMSO may not be good for a pregnant doe's babies. Just go with a soak, epsom salts the colliodal silver is good too. DMSO is an industrial solvent not approved for use as a medication (but often used extra label). Go easy squeezing the wound too, you can just as easily squeeze the bacteria deeper as squeezing it out...

If you have access to Colloidal Silver (available at health food stores) mix it 50/50 with DMSO (available in most feed and hardware stores, used for horse boo-boo's), and soak the foot in it for at least 4 minutes. DMSO will help carrying the CS deep into the tissue to kill bacteria. If you don't have CS, mix 50/50 DMSO/water to help with pain. Be careful not to get the DMSO on you, as it is a solvent and will carry chemicals (soaps, make-up, etc. that you have on your skin) into your body. Otherwise it won't harm you (I take it internally for tooth problems), but it will make you smell of garlic, and you will get a very nasty taste in your mouth. You can read more about DMSO at www.DMSO.org. Good luck, Sonja

I take it that she has had CD/T shot within the past year, for tetnus. If not she needs one immediately. Also within 4 weeks before birthing is a good time to give a doe CD/T vaccine because it will be passed on to the kids.

If she has a puncture wound I would wash it with peroxide while massaging and trying to squeeze out any possible dirt or rust that may be lodged within. You will need assistance in holding her as her foot will be quite sore.
An SQ injection of antibiotic of preference would be in order to help prevent infection. I like using Biomycin.

Might help to keep clean by putting some clean cloth or gauze in the bottom of a sock, then slip on her leg with the sore foot and keep it there with a few wraps of good ole duct tape. Make sure the padding is on the bottom of foot. And change out when dirty or gets wet.

My first goat, and my first pregnancy. Bella is 2 weeks out from her delivery date and she stepped on a nail today. She is trying really hard to not put any pressure on it. What if anything should I do?
