Mastitis, comes in several types and is caused for various reasons, mostly relating to nutrition. All mastitis appears to be caused by an imbalance in the health of the udder, particularly the pH, caused by incorrect calcium/magnesium ratios in the diet. Mastitis is a very important reason why proper feeding of goats is essential for their overall health and for the udder and milk production as well. It is believed that adding dolomite (lime) into the diet will help prevent mastitis. Once a change in milk is noted such as a darker than normal yield, a consistency that appears stringy or clotted, etc., the goat owner should immediately draw off a sample in a plastic bag and freeze it in case later testing is required to determine the type of mastitis afflicting the goat. Some forms of mastitis can be easily cured, others not. In either case, proper care, feeding and treatment for the goat is highly recommended at all times.
