Scrapie, is a disease that occurs more often in sheep than goats, but since it does occur in goats, measures are being taken to ID certain types of goats to prevent the further spread of this deadly and communicable disease. The clinical signs of scrapie are: weight loss despite retention of appetite, behavioral changes, itching and rubbing, biting at legs or side, lip smacking, loss of coordination, increased sensitivity to noise and movement, high-stepping gait of forelimbs, bunny-hop movement of rear, swaying of back end, tremor, down, unable to stand, death. More information about the new scrapie eradication program, including a section of questions and answers is available at www.animalagriculture.org/scrapie.
