Urinary Calculi (UC), sometimes called Water Belly and previously referred to as Urolithiasis, is a condition that occurs when undissolved minerals (especially calcium) form stones that can block the urinary tract of a goat, especially bucks when given high protein or unbalanced diets. Due to size differences between a doe and buck's urinary tract, does are not likely to be afflicted with Urinary Calculi, This condition, left unnoticed and untreated, is characterized by a painful and dribbling attempt to urinate. Left untreated, the goat will be unable to urinate and death can occur swiftly. Various commercially milled feeds include acidifiers to break down the minerals that can become stones. Other treatments include Ammonium Chloride powder added to the feed or water and in some countries outside the U.S., it has been reported that cider vinegar also acts as an acidifier. Urinary Calculi is a condition that warrants IMMEDIATE attention by the goat owner.
