Ammonium Chloride

Ammonium ChlorideAmmonium Chloride is used for the treatment and/or prevention of Urinary Calculi in male goats. The recommended dosage for prevention is one teaspoon per head per day and one tablespoon per head per day for treatment. However, you should consult a licensed veterinarian before administering this product!

Ammonium Chloride can also be used as a cleaning agent for many household tasks! Stains, clogs, stubborn dirt and grease! Many of your leading cleaners contain a certain amount of ammonium chloride. I had a dishwasher that never seemed to get clean. I used 3 tablespoons of ammonium chloride in place of detergent and ran an empty load. The dishwasher never looked cleaner!

There are two basic ways to use Ammonium Chloride: added to the water supply or added to the daily feed ration. In either case, for treatment, you must ensure that the affected goat is receiving the complete daily dosage. There are pros and cons to both the water and feed method:

  • Goats are less likely to drink small amounts of water with Ammonium Chloride.
  • Goats tend to pick through their food, leaving behind what you really want them to consume.

My recommendation is to administer the dosage of Ammonium Chloride, orally, through the use of a turkey baster or large syringe.

When a goat is being treated for Urinary Calculi with the use of Ammonium Chloride in either the feed or the water, it should be noted that recovery times are somewhat extended. Ammonium Chloride will not cure Urinary Calculi overnight.

In using Ammonium Chloride for the prevention of Urinary Calculi, adding to the water supply is okay as the water supply is usually a larger volume of water than used in the treatment phase. Adding to the food is also acceptable in this case. One thing to remember is that you shouldn't continually use Ammonium Chloride for prevention purposes over a long period of time as toxicity levels of Ammonium Chloride could result. I prefer to use Ammonium Chloride in these situations as a "one week on, and one week off" management plan.
