: I'm weaning the kids and feeding the does hay. Never did feed grain.
: Both the girls look so thin and boney right now. It has been 12 days
: and their udders are just starting to go down. They are hollowed out
: so bad in the rear and ribs are showing. Can I give them some grain to help fill them out w/o increasing milk?

Thats a tough one, how about increasing the quality of their hay? We just don't see our does doing well on browse, pasture and hay alone. They need the extra protein of a good quality grain mix and also loose cattle minerals. Even when they are dry and not bred they get 1 pound per head per day as body maintenece, and any one over 100 pounds (which is most of us!) gets 2 pounds per day. The extra size the kids get with more milk produced and the flesh the does are able to keep by feeding of grain while they are milking/nursing, then are able to be bred right back, is incentive enough for us to feed grain.
