Parasites & Anemia

Posted by Mary Ann on May 17, 2001 at 12:14:58:

I purchased a small herd of Boers in August 2000 from Glen Rose, TX.

This spring, I lost 4 kids, all stillborn, one breech, one arthrogryposis. Tested the herd for Cache Valley Virus. All but one doe tested negative. The doe that tested positive had normal healthy twins.

I have been diligent with worming every 28 - 31 days, originally with Ivermec Sheep Drench. In March, when the vet was here bleeding for CVV, he suggested one doe that was pretty pulled down be wormed with Panacur at 200 lb dose per goat. I wormed the entire herd plug gave B complex injections.

A few days ago the nannie that tested positive for CVV, swelled on her face. It was more swollen in the evenings, minimized in the mornings. Took her to the vet yesterday afternoon. He ran several studies and found that she was seriously infected with parasites and anemic. Hematocrit was 9, he says normal is 35. Sent her home with three doses of Panacur suspension and Liver 7 for three days and told me to add B complex. Recommended I treat the entire herd (18). On inspection this morning, I found the vulva of all nannies and female kids as white as my tee shirt. The underside of the bucks eyelids were pale as well, just not as severe.

The vet is out of town for the next few days. Do I continue to inject the entire herd with Liver 7 and B complex for the next two days along with the SafeGuard equine paste? Any other suggestions?
