Gary, There is definetly something going around! We had someone on the Chatroom, I have had 2 calls this week, and now this. In the two cases that called me it was meningeal worm, and though I spoke to the vet directly in one of them, the other one opted to call my vet. The real problem if this is menegial worm is that the treatment for this will more than likely cause abortion, since you reduce the swelling in the spinal cord with dexamethazone, a powerful steriod.

Kim, if you have white tail deer near you place, or if your hayfields are near white tail deer, than this could easily be the problem, please feel free to contact me through the 911 site or email me privately. If your vet (like mine) is a horse vet they will call this protozoal myilitis. A protozoa (worm like) passes through the blood brain barrier because of a break in immunity and then goes down the spinal cord and sets up housekeeping, has babies, which causes a swelling of the spinal cord, presses against the cord and the goat is paralized from their down. If it is high in the cord the goat dies from respiratory distress. If the doe stays down she will die of pnemonia. You treat this with a heavy dose of Ivermectin Plus, given injected to kill the protozoa, then Banamine for pain and Dexametazone to take the swelling down. We also used Naxcel to keep pnemonia at bay (since we had no idea really how long she would be down) and also sulfa by mouth, to keep cocci from taking hold. Faydra came around and was up in about 3 days, and was all but perfect in 10. We rebred her on the next heat. She is now 8 and wonderful! Vicki
