More on the "Moon Theory" and Influencing Gender

As many of you know I've been researching alot about kidding ratios during the full moon phase. A few people have written to me about this and I'm getting quite a bit of feedback that supports that 5 day window either side of the full moon.

But another question has come up focused on breeding during specific phases of the moon to influence gender. As vast as the Internet is, there is really not alot of information to support this theory. (I learned a few things too that I didn't want to know as well). Still, I began talking with old timers who plant crops by the moon phases and they too seem to think that there may be a relationship.

So basically I'm going out on a limb here and hypothesizing a little bit from what I've learned so far: a few years back there was a book written called "Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus" - I read the book, understood it but never thought it had anything to do with goats. LOL

This really does get WEIRD so please bear with me... I have never been a real avid believer in astrology but this almost crosses paths. By zodiacal definition, beginning with the dates of March 21 to April 20, the sign begins with a masculine influence and changes each sign. Masculine to Feminine to Masculine to Feminine.

Well let's say for example it's a "masculine" month and you breed your does by the full moon and "Venus" is closer to the moon than "Mars" at that point in time. I would tend to believe that the odds are going to favor that you are going to have more does than bucks in 5 months. The opposite would be true if Mars were closer than Venus at breeding.

Okay, that's Part One of the Moon Theory but let's look at Part Two which is going to be more factual rather than mystic:

What we are essentially dealing with in terms of physic is Light, Magnetism and Gravity (which is magnetism is a sense). It's a proven fact that some animals such as birds have a pinneal gland that sends a message to their brain and says, "there is less light in the day, time to fly south where there is more light". They do this. So it may be factual to say that the conjunction of the planets to the moon at any given phase may also signal something in the brain to influence gender. More light means more bucks - less light means more does or vice versa.

Perhaps daylight breeding as opposed to nightime breeding may also influence gender - it's a hypothesis that can only be supported through testing and seeing the results over many years. A small piece of evidence that does exist and has been proven can be found in the article located here:
Basically paraphrased it says that animals prefer hay harvested in the afternoon rather than hay cut in the morning. The light?

Part Three (and the final one for this time around) deals with the clinical aspect of influencing gender. Of course most of this is fact because it is known and proven. The X and Y chromosomes determine the gender and it's a race to gestation from the very beginning. Genetics perhaps have proven to be the most influential factor on gender that are presently known.

I'm old enough now to have seen a few generations and have noticed a few of my friends families have the uncanny ability to have all boys or all girls. One friend in particular came from a family that has eight children - all boys. So the boys grow up, start families and guess what, each of them have all girls! One son in fact was desperately trying everything to just have one lonely son to take fishing - no luck, they had another girl. Luckily he loves them all the same.

So in closing, "is there a relationship between the moon and gender?" Possibly. But it is going to take quite a bit more research and testing but for now, I'm putting my stock into the moon charts because my testing has really only just begun on this fascinating subject. If it turns out to be a wild goose chase, so be it. At least I will have learned some more things along the way. And for those interested in this, I am writing an in depth article that I will soon put up in the GoatWorld Articles section.

One more thing. If you are breeding by the moon, my moon charts tell me that these are the days to breed for does in June (based upon the proximity of Venus to the Moon):

June 8th
June 17th

For bucks:
June 6th
June 13th
June 21st
