I think I read the same article or perhaps at least the same idea in another article... It said you should be thinking more... "feed the rumen" as opposed to "feed the goat". Keeping those rumens working smooth is the whole idea to keeping your goat happy and healthy, and growing to it's full potential.

I knew this worked with giving quality foods to my dog, the kind with better sources of protein(Iams/Purina One) I ended up with a gorgeous Airedale Terrier who had little poops as she digests the good food so well.

Oh yeah- back to that article:
It made a lot of sense to me, and that is why I chose to try out the free choice baking soda. I had already launched out on my own with yogurt squirts down the throat, and baking soda mixed with water in a bottle to treat my kids when they'd get "bloated" up. That seemed to happen a lot -especially during those first few weeks that I was acclimating them over to hay, grasses, leaves, bark, pine needles, purina goat chow, an occasional carrot bite, etc...

Two of the stupidest things I did as a newbie to the four goat kids was to buy a little bag of alfalfa from Wal-mart to give as a treat. It was WAY too rich for the kids!!!. The other was to run out of Purina Kid milk replacement...and substitute with Land-O' Lakes Lamb Milk replacer. I thought that it would be simular enough that even though I mixed a bit of the Purina in also- we'd have no diarrhea problems ...W-R-O-N-G-O... I ended up with miserable babies... Now I know better. Sheesh!

Now you know why I am so thankful for this forum. I read it multiple times a day :o)
