Healthy kids is great Linda. What breed are you dealing with. In the 10 years my middle daughter raised LaManchas, I think we had only one or two sets of triplets. Twins all the time! Using a very young buck and having him breed doe after doe, will also give you singles. When we do use a young buck we hand breed, only letting him breed one do every other day or so. I don't believe at all it burns them out or stunts them, I just believe they don't have the amount of sperm a full grown buck does. By the time most bucks are hitting their prime at 4 to 6 years old, most folks are getting younger bucks to use.

It also makes a huge difference if you are breeding out of season, like does kidding now are, or in the heighth of breeding season, which for us is Sept through December. I expect younger does to carry less kids, and does who are having babies in Nov/Dec and June/July to have less kids, though here in the south late December is our normal kidding time.

If you are severely selenium defficient than this could also be a reason, go to the map and look, but mostly it is not breeding, or kidding problems. If you are talking dairy, how about trying to kid out a little earlier in spring, and really watching your nutrtion during breeding. But geeze my girls would kill for alfalfa! Vicki
