We had a lovely outbreak of soremouth a couple of years ago. Such fun!! I've read the scab contains the virus and when it falls off the virus can live for an undetermined amount of time. That may be where your newest cases came from. The article also said that the virus could be killed during the winter if it was really cold. I live in the south and our winters aren't usually all that bad so I figured I'd be cursed with this stuff forever. But, so far it hasn't reared it's ugly head again and I haven't missed it! I am glad to hear Vicki say the antibodies are passed on to the babies!
I ordered the vaccine from Jeffers too. I don't know that it did any good but who can say? I didn't know what else to do at the time! We also kept Neosporin (we got the store brand!) on the sores to keep them soft so they wouldn't be so painful. One doe got a sore near her eye (she was white and had the pinkest skin!) and I put terramycin in her eye and on the sore. Some of the sores were really nasty and were in their nostrils. As Nat said, always wear rubber gloves when you're touching your goats as this stuff can be spread to humans.
It took several weeks for it to clear up. The animals that had the sores before we gave the vaccine didn't seem to be any worse or better than those that got sores after the vaccine. And others didn't have a reaction at all. It's been a couple of years now and we've had lots of babies and new animals come onto the place and there hasn't been another case of it....knock on wood!! I had enough of it dealing with just the sores on the mouth. I would have a breakdown if my girls got the version Vicki mentioned! Do they sell Neomycin in a 55 gal container?!
