I'm still new to goats when it comes to summer and fall illnesses. I am currently treating one of my little doelings for pneumonia my vet told me to use exnel very good drug but also very expensive! I'm using it also because i happen to have it on hand other wise I'd use just the reg pen. I beleive certain strains are contagious but I'm no expert by far. I also think that amonia and the humidity and poor air ventilation is a big factor to this. The small ones especially being that they are closer to all the urine and poop that hits the ground. As far as I know it cannot be passed to humans beings that it is an air quality issue for the goats and not for us humans. Although I think that stress, overheating, overcrowding and other conditions can cause pneumonia and I beleive it is a bacterial disease that can be contagious among the herd. I noticed my little Dutchess was kinda slower than usual and what I call thumping (labored) when breathing, but wasn't sure if it was from the heat that she was breathing like that or not. So picked her up and listened to her breathing it was raspy and she was also warm took her temp it was 104.4. Called the vet and he agreed it was pneumonia. I'm on her 3 day of treatment hope she will come out fine She has alot more energy and is eating good like a little goat should. Her sister on the other hand well thats to be continued in another message.
