I dehorned one of my mature does and while her head was sore she couldn't push everyone around like she was used to doing. The end result was that she lost her immediate position in the pecking order. She didn't fall completely from grace but she isn't #1 anymore either.
Then again, it could be that Houdini's odor is changed from the hospital, medications, infection or any number of other things he's been through and Einstein simply doesn't recognize him. Of course, it is nature's way to get rid of an injured or sick animal that can't keep up with the rest of the herd and keeping the two separate until Houdini heals enough to get around better is probably the safest thing to do.
