I'm seriously thinking of getting a dairy goat -- can someone help me with some really basic questions? I'm a horse/dog/cat person; new to goats, as I've mentioned before.
I'm thinking of getting a dairy doe for my own consumption. I'm single and live alone and go through maybe 2-3 gallons of cow's milk a week, so from what I understand, one nanny should be more than sufficient for my uses. (I also already know that I prefer goat's milk to cow's milk, but the stuff's $3.29 a quart at the grocery store!) But, I have some basic questions:
1. How often would she need to be milked? Can I get away with once a day, or is twice a day required?
2. How often would she need to be bred? Every year?
3. What kind of health issues should I be concerned about when I look for a dairy goat?
4. Finally, what breed would you reccomend for a single person who just wants some milk in the fridge?
