I purchased a buckling at just under 8 weeks of age (not knowing enough to know he should have been with his mom another couple of weeks.) I think it would have made a big difference in the beginning. He was very stressed and having taken the breeders word that he was weaned, although he was still nursing (in with mom). I brought him home and he was doing pretty well for the most part, but I noticed that his rumin was always hard and somewhat enlarged (never developed bloat or anything else, but worried me constantly) so I always deeply massaged the rumin area. This was not enough, he just didn't seem to be digesting anything really well even at 4 months of age. I started giving him probios at feedings and as a treat, between, using tube after tube. This seemed to help him and he could never get enough. Within the next 2 months he no longer had the hardened or enlarged rumin at all. I don't know if this helped him to develop his rumin or if just time did, but I really think the probios helped him. He is now a happy human momma's boy at almost a year. I just wanted to post this in case anyone runs into a similar situation, it can't hurt. |
