Sounds like she is fine. She may have been a bit crampy for a while after kidding. Could have been a bit hot after doing all that work. And her guts will have started moving back to their usual positions (that's gotta feel weird). Most does eat the placentas or at least most of them. There is usually one for each kid. Afterbirth and placenta are the same thing, placenta is the proper term afterbirth is the "nice" name...

Don't forget to deworm her tomorrow. Even if you did it a week or 2 ago...

Also wanted to add that her temp is 102.5, and she ate a good amount of oatmeal and honey again. She's taking good care of the kids, they are both nursing better, and the breathing seemed somewhat better when we went back down. She isn't really happy w/ me for putting the thermometer up her butt, but hey, what we do for love. :-)

Hello Maggie, thanks for responding so quickly. I did see a mass on the floor of her pen that I really believe was the afterbirth. :-) Now, my question regarding that is it was rather small (6 inches round maybe)... but it was a mass nonetheless. Does each kid have a placenta? Or just one for the two? And she very well could have eaten it, there wasn't a whole lot left afterwards anyway. The pen was pretty clean. Regarding the afterbirth as well, there is only one right? Placenta/afterbirth are the same thing? There were no bags or anything by the time we got there, Mom must have eaten them.

Has she passed the placentas? If not she may still have a kid inside. I would lube up and check to see if she needs help delivering another kid.

Do deworm her too, tommorrow. The stress of kidding makes dormant worms become active.

Hello all. I have a 4 yr. old Alpine doe who kidded out this morning. Sometime before 7:30am EST, when I got to the barn. She had twins, and both were almost dry, she had taken very good care of them. Mom also looked fine, if a little tired. I gave Mom some warm water w/molasses right away when we found her, and she did drink some of it. Then, we went up to the house to get the baby box (didn't expect kids until today or tomorrow, mom didn't show signs). Got the kids to nurse a little (although the little buckling took awhile to "get it"). Went out for a few things from the hardware store, and went to check on Mom when we got back. She was breathing a little heavy, but seemed okay. I sat w/ her awhile, and her respirations were very heavy at times, and then would calm down at times. She was breathing rapidly and noisily through her nose. We figured she was just tired, and left her awhile. This afternoon about 4:30 we went back down and she was laying down still breathing fast. We got her up, by taking ahold of one of the kids... and she was okay, but still breathing fast. She is eating grain (very little) but is eating hay, and she did eat some warm oats w/ honey. She then had part of an apple, which she loves. She is chewing her cud, and seems to be acting fine, just breathing weird. Also, the kids aren't nursing as much as I've seen others nurse. she's our first goat in years, and the other 9 does aren't kidding yet, so this is "new" to me. I don't know what to do! I think she may have worms, but when I pull her eyelids down she's pink. She is just not breathing right. And add to that I'm worried about the kids. I'm freaking out, and all my goat friends are busy, so I can't ask them! Heading out now to do temps, resp. checks, etc. Someone help!!!

Ann Marie
