This is likely Soremouth caused by a herpesvirus somewhat similar to cold sores. It is very contagious, there is no real treatment, it just has to run its course. Most fo the time the goats will just eat a bit slower because their mouths and lips are tender. Watch for sores on the goat's teats and udders (sores can appear anywhere). And if that happens just be sure the kid is being allowed to nurse. It takes about 4 to 6 weeks to completely heal. In the mean time for the sake of your reputation do not bring any goats onto the farm nor sell any until the last goat is healed. This disease really is more of a nuisance than a real threat. Good thing is that once it is over the goats will have a long lasting immunity to it. One Goatworld member swears by Gentian Violet as an aid to healing soremouth sores faster. You can get this at the drug store but you may have to ask for it.

You can get it too, most goat keepers get it on their hands from handling and treating infected goats. When humans get it its called Orf. If you get a painful sore that won't heal be sure to tell the doctor you may have been exposed to Orf. Doctors today would not think to ask.

Hello I'm new to raising goats. I have seen in the last couple of days that the does with kids have developed black wart looking growths aroung the corners of there mouths. I have seen it on two of the kids (out of seperate does). The does who have not kidded yet don't have them. And also most of the kids don't have them yet. I was hoping someone would let me know what these are and if the are going to be harmful and spread to rest of goats. Any treatment for what ever this may be Thank you very much
