He will be very "weanie". pitiful and painful for about a week. Be sure to get him some pain meds from the vet for at least the first 2 to 3 days and house him ALONE for at least a week or 2 for his protection to let him heal. If he is butted in the rear he can start bleeding. He won't be all that interested in company for 7 to 10 days anyway.

You need to keep him separated for at least 30 days to let the sperm in the vas deferens and prostate gland be reabsorbed.

The odor will definitely diminish in that time. But for it to go away entirely he will have to get most of the testosterone out of his system and this could take a month or even 2. Try using a dog shampoo meant for removing skunk odor, after all they are both "musks". Bathe him about 2 weeks after the surgery if he is feeling okay. He will lose his other bucky characteristics over time too such as longer hair and fuller beard and the heavy muscling in his neck.

We did this to a 6 year old buck last year and don't regret it a bit. Be aware that some former bucks never forget they are boys and make very good heat detectors. I even had one that would still get an erection and fully breed the does.

I have a Billy goat that I am have surgically castrated by the vet in a week. He is a little over 1 yr. old. I am keeping 2 of his daugters from my kids this spring and don't want one of my goats that had a c-section to get pregnant again. I thought about selling him, but he is very special to the family, so we decided to keep him and have him altered. He is a real sweet heart and loves attention.

Once he is surgically castrated, how long until he no longer is able to inpregnate my does? I know he will no longer produce sperm or hormones, but may still have sperm left in the urinary system and hormones produced by the testes still in his system.

He is so lonely by himself and I would like to put him back with the herd ASAP but don't want any unwanted pregnancies.

Also, how soon after will he stop producing so much musk odor? He is almost intolerable right now, he has been in rut since my does kidded 6 weeks ago! I would like to bath him. Any suggestions how long to wait? Or what type of shampoo to use to get rid of the odor?

Thanks!!!
Tina
