Vaccinate all the adults giving 2 cc by SQ injection then booster in 2 weeks. Then give once or twice yearly boosters. A vaccine is all natural, BTW, does not affect being "organic". Give pregnant does a booster 4 to 6 weeks before kidding to boost antibodies in the colostrum. A vaccine gives long lasting protection but takes 3 weeks or so for it to be effective. A vaccine works by stimulating the immune system to produce antibodies.

Kids are vaccinated at 8 to 10 weeks old and boostered 21 days later. They develop an active immune system starting about 8 weeks old when the antibodies from their dam are wearing off.

I also give all of my kids CD antitoxin (2 cc) at birth for added protection. This gives quick but short lived protection (about 3 to 4 weeks). Many goat producers give the antitoxin every 3 weeks or so until they vaccinate. Antitoxin is also all natural.

Hi again Maggie:
I wanted to know your routein for vaccinating CD&T (seeing I have not vaccinated anyone yet). I was trying to go all natrual but if in fact the kid I just lost had enterotoximia, I should be vaccinating, right? What I mean by routein is at what age would you vaccinate my goats?
thanks much

Hi Maggie:
Sadly , we lost her today! I am crushed but I think I learned a lot. She was 8 weeks old. She died on the way to the vet's. The vet thought that she had a very bad stomach ache and if I had had activated charcoal around, I think I could have saved her. (if I find it around here, I'll really be upset because I thought I had some.)

We are o.k. with the wet weather but the other thing that I learned is that the snotty noses and coughing are very very much due to "ventilation". So even though we cleaned the barn almost every day in that weather, it was a problem. Now that the air is better all the coughs are almost gone. I also have to work on making sure I have the right mineral balances (like you said) and that may be part of our problem. I did find a vet that is quite good so he is willing to work with our herd.

The rest of our herd is doing well, so the vet does not really know what happened but I truly suspect that I upset her little rumen by using too much of something (although the vet is not convinced).

Thank you so very much for helping me.

I'm learning (maybe the hard way)
sadly but with much love

Hi thanks
She is very very sick and we'll be going to the vets at 1:30. He didn't think pneumonia because of the temp. my guess is what you are saying about the gut. I am also working with my own personal homeopath who has given her a remedy. She is in pain and we did banamine per the vet. I will let you know.
thanks

Normal temp is 101.5 to 103.5 kids are usually toward the high end when normal. This kid is very sick, may be pneumonia , may be enterotoxemia. With enterot the nerves are also affected toward the later stages so it can look like polio but is actually a toxin being released by bad microbes in her gut. Any digestive upset can cause this to happen because the microbes are ther all the time anyway, but when the gut action slows down or stops these microbes grow at a rapid rate.

Don't take away the mineral, but do give RedCell.

If the snot is thick and yellow or green the other goats need to be on antibiotics for this.

Hi Maggie The little 8 wk. old doe cannot stand this a.m. , she tried to pee when I got her up and could not stand. She is crying (if I pick her up) but she is just lying down otherwise. I tried to put her with her mother but she just stood there. I have her 3 cc. fortified B complex orally but is all i knew what to do (and that is probably wrong)... The other goats have very snotty noses. I did give everyone red cell last night and took away their other mineral, hoping that would help. Should I get the vet? Very very expensive and I do not have one I can relate to at all...
thanks
