At his age nothing works as well as it did when he was younger. You also say he has had a diet change in the last year and no longer gets bran. Could be the feed formula was changed. That actually could be the reason for the change now. Could be the company changed the formula for the mineral block too.

Thank you very much! Why after 17 years would these minerals start affecting him?

Blocks don't work well for goats their tongues are too small and too smooth to be able to lick enough before the salt in the block makes them stop licking. Try switching to a loose mineral with adequate copper and zinc. Be sure the calcium to phosporus ratio is 2:1. Most cattle minerals have this ratio that is why they make a good substitute for a goat mineral if a suitable one can't be found.

By mail order you can get Golden Blend Goat minerals from Custom Milling. These seem to be widely liked by goats and have adequate copper and zinc...

His diet consists of 1 lb of goat grain per day and access to hay all day. He also grazes on grass for about 5 hours a day. He has a trace mineral salt block which he licks very often. He use to eat a cup of bran a day for the past 16 years as when he was two a vet recommended that we feed him bran as he was alergic to goat grain. (at the time I did not know you could buy goat feed with ammonium chloride in it) Thank you!

Does he have access to a loose mineral with 3000 to 5000 ppm zinc? Zinc deficiency is often linked to hair loss. Copper deficiency can cause hair loss too. Your mineral should have 900 to 1500 ppm copper.

What exactly is his diet?

Hi, I have a 17 yr old wether shedding out hair but no hair is growing in. He started losing it on his ears and on his face and now he is losing it on his back and side. there are no signs of lice and he does not seem to itch too bad besides the effects of normal shedding. Three months ago he had an ultra sound for urinary calculi problems and that hair has not grown back either. Any suggestions as to what it might be. His skin looks healthy where the hair has fallen out.
