Once a day should be fine. Please remember your gloves, you can catch this and it is much more painful to humans! |

Update again. We had a terrible time trying to find gentian violet. We finally found it in another town yesterday and they had one tiny bottle (1 oz.) but the supplier will be in today and they are getting a larger bottle for us. The one that started out with it is starting to clear up and my little Boar doe has a mild case of it. But my little Boar billy has a terrible case of it! His mouth and nose are covered and he even has one on each of his eyelids. Those will have to heal on their own, I won't put this that close to his eyes. I've been checking each of the goats and my adult Nubian has it and her half grown daughter. So far that's it out of 21 goats. But I'm expecting more. Do I need to put gentian violet on more than once a day? I put it on the scabs. We handle each of our goats everyday and they are all very gentle so it wasn't that bad in putting it on but Mama Nubian decided to bolt when she saw the bottle so my hands are wearing a lot of purple. I forgot to take the gloves down there with me. LOL |

I'll pick some up Friday and start using it. I've got gloves but do you think I remember to take them down there to the goat house? Heavens no!! LOL And yes I kiss my goats on the head but being very careful at this point. I sure don't need that stuff on my face!! LOL Thanks Maggie, I appreciate it. |

You can find it in the pharmacy, probably with the first aid or wound care supplies. Pick up some latex gloves too and wear them while treating teh goats to cut down on the chances of you getting it. I have had goats with soremouth a few times and never gotten it myself. Just be reasonably careful, wash up, don't kiss the goats (LOL) and you will be fine. |

What part of WalMart can I find it? I'll be in town Friday. I think it is probably the same as I have gotten in the spray for wounds before. It's excellent to put on dogs ears for flys. I don't have any new goats that have been brought in since last spring and don't plan on it. My little Boar doe has it the least. All of my goats are quite spoiled but these 4 are very spoiled and follow me everywhere. Two I bought as bottle babies last spring. That's why I am taking precautions because they are so use to the attention. I'm just hoping that I don't get it. Thanks so much for the info. |

The Genitian Violet really does work, and it works fairly fast too within a few hours in most cases. I do warn you though that it is a dark purple and will stain your hands, clothing etc it will not wash out of clothing so use caution I use the medical gloves that you find at any store. Hope that this helps |

Greetings, I have to add my two cents here....If these goats come down with something that looks like this again,,or looks worse,,,it could be sore mouth again,,,there is more than one strain of sore mouth,,now they WILL be immune to getting the same strain again,,,but they can still get the others,,just so you know, & don't freak out and think it is some other something because "it can't be sore mouth due to the fact they have had that already"....The other thing is that some strains are worse than others.....Also, if you bring in new goats, just because they are not showing signs of sore mouth does not mean they are not carriers,,,they can bring it into your herd even if they look clean & the whole herd they are coming from looks clean... Thank you for your time Tammatha |

Update: Three out of four have gotten soremouth. None of the 17 in the pasture are showing any signs yet. I've been checking every morning and my husband checks every night and as soon as we come to the house we are washing and disinfecting our hands to be on the safe side. Maggie, I want to tell you how much we appreciate you sharing your knowledge. I know if I have a problem you are the first I go to. Thank you so much!! |

Thank you so much Maggie. I was alarmed at how fast it was spreading. I may go ahead and let it run it's course and so far I haven't found anything on any of the other goats. He is housed with 3 others then turned out during the day. I appreciate you answering so fast. |

Your goat has soremouth or contagious ecthyma, caused by a herpesvirus and similar to cold sores in humans. There is no real cure but one of the members had very good luck using gentian violet (she found this at Walmart) on the sores to get them to heal a bit faster. This is very contagious, likely your other goats will break with it too. You can try isolating the infected goat, but likely the virus that causes soremouth is now on all feed and water bowls, hay feeders, walls anything the infected goat has had its mouth on or touching. A strong bleach solution may help disinfect these items. The dried up scabs also carry the virus. It is contagious to humans too and the sores can occur anywhere on both goats and humans. Wear gloves and wash well after doing any treatment on the infected goat. Most of the time humans get it on their hands. If you get a painful sore that won't heal on your hand be sure to tell the Dr. it could be Orf (it is called this when humans get it). Kids can spread it to their dam's udders, goats can get it on their tail webs from nose to tail contact... Good thing is that soremouth is more of a nuisance than a real problem for most goats. It heals on its own in 3 to 4 weeks and the goat is immune for life after that. I have never treated it, just let it run its course, being sure the infected goat was able to eat and drink. They do tend to eat more slowly and carefully to avoid hurt themselves. It is unethical to take any goat off the farm when you have active soremouth in the herd. Don't bring any new goats in either for several months if you can help it. |

I have a goat that started out with a sore on the corner of his mouth that looked like a human cold sore. It has spread so fast that it's on both sides and one starting on the middle of his mouth and I'm seeing several spots around his nose this afternoon. They have been out in the pasture during the day. None of the other goats have anything like it. What can I give him? |
